Hello lovely readers! I just wanted to drop in after this long absence to direct you over to my personal blog, Mai Autumn. There has been a lot going on in my little world (if you've been over to the shop, you will see lots of changes there too!), and I have decided it may be time to bid this blog farewell. Although, I am still constantly finding inspiration while I'm perusing the internet all day, so you can find some of my discoveries over on Pinterest, as well as on the Mai Autumn blog, from time to time.

When you're ready to get creative, do you ever need a little push in the right direction, color-wise? If you're a maker of any sort, you may get stuck when it comes to your color palette now and then. Color Collective to the rescue! This fabulous blog has put together such an amazing selection of inspiring images! And not only are there oodles of lovely visuals, but graphic designer Lauren Willhite also pulls the color palette of each image and sums it up nicely below each photo. After stumbling upon Color Collective via Kiki & Polly, I have to say, this is going to be a regular haunt for me from now on!

I'm so in love with everything from The Wild Unknown! I came across this beautiful company last year, and they just keep getting better and better! All of their designs evoke a feeling of mystery and folksy-ness that I just adore. Check out their website to shop or head on over to their facebook page to keep up to date on their latest happenings.

The Wild Unknown is an independent and family-run business specializing in handmade objects. The distinctive illustrative style of the prints and calendars is the work of Kim Krans, a multi-faceted visual artist, musician, and connoisseur of all hand made things. In 2006 Kim began gifting her calendars to a few friends, and The Wild Unknown has been growing steadily since. Recently, her husband Jonny Ollsin joined The Wild Unknown as the positive-vibes coordinator and web designer. Seeing as though the couple’s creative endeavors include everything from playing music to building a cabin together, The Wild Unknown has become yet another extension of their aesthetics and values.
In 2009, Kim's mom (and expert stained glass artisan) Gaynelle Oslund joined The Wild Unknown's team. She now produces the amazing prisms on the site.

There are only a few lovely hand-painted brooches in 2mountain's new Etsy shop, but I see some serious potential! I came across Katia Carletti's wondrous creations via my Etsy Activity Feed (which I kinda love, by the way) this afternoon while I was taking a break from my big move. No, I haven't literally moved, but I have bargained with my lovely boyfriend to let me use our extra bedroom for my office! I'm so excited to have my own little workshop for all my musings!

It's been a busy two days, moving things around, and before that, Christmas (and after that - the huge snow storm!) but I'm now back in the swing of things for the new year! I can't wait to show you all the fun things in store for Fey Handmade! Wait til you see :) :)

2011 Calendar - Mai Autumn

It's here! The 2011 calendar, designed by yours truly :) I had so much fun designing the little birds in this calendar, along with my very own lettering! It is exactly what I was hoping it would be! Thirteen pages of pretty prisms and birds, all hand drawn in ink and printed on creamy off-white card stock, tied together with a special Japanese ribbon to top it off. There are only 24 of these available with this ribbon. Depending on the demand, there may be a second edition released, but it will have an entirely different ribbon (or ribbons? who knows!) - I'm thinking floral if this version sells out. Each of the calendars is signed, dated and numbered, and then packaged up for gift-giving. Let me know what you think! :)

I adore this and all the necklaces from Akiko of kikosattic. Based in Japan, this artist used to make miniature doll animals and started crafting with leather 5 years ago. Her creations are so unique and very affordable too! (prices for one of her pieces start at $27) This caramel purse necklace is at the top of my wishlist, for sure!

Sweater for your Coffee - Wayside Violet Cozies

On this blustery, chilly day, I could really go for a warm cup of coffee. We are kind of coffee fanatics in my apartment, so we order Peet's directly from the source - fresh roasted and shipped from California! It is delicious! As I write this morning's post, I am patiently waiting for my buddy at UPS to deliver our shipment for the month. I'm not really myself until I have my morning coffee, so we'll see how this goes :)

Onto Wayside Violet's adorable coffee cozies! These are so sweet and just my style. I wish I could wear a sweater that looks as good as these cozies! :) Jessica is a coffee lover from Chicago that has turned her passion into something beautiful. Each cozy is hand knit and machine washable - a great eco-friendly gift for the coffee (or tea!) lover in your life.

While following the breadcrumbs of inspiration this afternoon (oh my! it's already 2pm?!) I came upon Karen Appleton's sweet and luxurious paintings. She is in love with bows and I so admire her obsession and devotion to such an interesting subject matter! I can just imagine each and every package waiting to be opened and undone. I also really enjoy her paintings of purses - perhaps her theme centers around the hidden? Absolutely stunning work!

And, with it now being November (!) I'm already starting to get into that gift-giving frame of mind - these decadent packages are just helping my sugar plum dreams along :) It's always fun to bring a hostess gift wrapped up in the most extravagant way!

My Halloween - Moonstruck - Zombies

In anticipation of the huge party my town is throwing tonight, my boyfriend and I are having a little gathering to watch the mayhem ensue. If you're from Asbury Park, NJ, or even from Monmouth County, you know about what's happening tonight - The Zombie Walk - but since you're probably all not from my town, I will explain what is about to take over... thousands of people dress up like zombies and shuffle down the streets, outside my window. It's quite a sight! I'll put it this way - if you didn't know what was going on and you just stumbled upon this creative looking downtown tonight, you'd think zombies were taking over the world and you might just break out your Zombie Survival Guide: The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead

I'm not particularly fond of zombies, so I just like to sit up on my roof and watch them go by. But, I do like to dress up to celebrate one of my most favorite holidays, so, my boyfriend and I decided we would dress up like Loretta and Ronny from Moonstruck (it's his favorite movie and he can really pull off the Nick Cage thing pretty well haha!) It's going to be so fun! In honor of Loretta's fab nerdilicious outfits in the movie, I have pulled together some fun fashion that's inspiring my own outfit for the night.

With this new design, I'd like to share with you all, the new direction this blog is preparing to take. For the longest time, I've wanted to create something of meaning to me, and for the past two years, it has culminated in the shop that is Fey Handmade. In addition to that creation, I want to extend my own inspiration by sharing so much more with my dear readers. I hope you will enjoy this new direction and share it with those you think would also enjoy coming with us on our journey! :) So here goes - my new mission for this blog (ahem):

Fey Handmade aims to inspire its readers through art, ideas, unknown cultures and simple, yet magical, everyday observations. This is a place to stop and notice the little things that make life beautiful. A place to be creative, independent and free-spirited. This site is for those that are constantly seeking. And we hope that we can provide that spark of inspiration for you each day, and that you return again to share your experience with us.

Fey Handmade features independent designs, businesses and ideas that are paving the way to a more sustainable future, where amazing design is supported and celebrated.

I came upon the notion of moving the blog in this direction when I realized what I do on a daily basis - look for inspiration! If I'm not doing that, then I may be actually creating something (but more than likely, that is only a small fraction of my day!) Inspiration is what keeps me going and makes me feel like I have a purpose in my life. I like to think that all that inspiring is leading me to greater things, but I may never see a concrete indication of that - and that's okay! It may result in new art or a new pretty thing in the shop, but it's not always so apparent where anything comes from in my creative world. I'm often such a logical thinker, and it's hard for me to take a step back and realize that everything isn't so cut and dry all the time. Inspiration is one of those things that is elusive, vague and indefinable. My goal with this new way of blogging is to bring all of that elusiveness into a little more of a tangible place. Simple as that. It's a lot to take on, but I think it's going to be a great ride!

I'm so excited to share all of this with you! You can expect to see a whole lot more posting (hopefully, if I can keep up with myself!) and there will be lots of guest posting coming soon as well.

Recently, I got a message from a lovely little lady about the most delicate and whimsical designs I have seen in a while. Emma Walsh Design is all about soft, elegant accessories, and her photos are just dreamy!

Emma has been studying architecture for the past four years and interior design for the last year. She makes all sorts of things from homewares to bridal accessories and jewellery crafted from materials found in vintage stores, combining them with new elements. She says she loves that she can bring these pre loved bits of beauty - things with a story behind them - into the 21st century with a new life in the form of elegant, feminine designs that demand attention. I think her designs definitely translate well into the here and now! Dainty, nostalgic... everything I dream about! And it is so obvious that this is a natural born creative! So glad to have found her :)

Just relaxing away my Sunday afternoon when I get a little ping from my email telling me that the Etsy newsletter has arrived. I usually make it a habit to at least check out all the pretty finds in case there is some treasure I absolutely can't live without (which happens all too often!) and today, I was so pleasantly surprised by my discovery. They based their Get the Look on Liane Tyrell's beautiful farmhouse in New Hampshire. I am in love! This is the epitome of everything I've ever wanted in a house (and lately, apartment living has been getting me down - I am in desperate need of a porch!) I meandered over to Liane's flickr and found even more pretty, pretty photos. Ah! I'm in fantasy land!

I just love the light! And the simplicity! It looks so relaxing :) Go check out all of Liane's lovely creations over at her Etsy shop as well. You won't be disappointed!

This Saturday at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens they are having a super huge party to celebrate their 100th birthday (or Bee-Day! Get it?!) (hehe)

From their site:

Celebrate BBG's centennial with a bee-filled birthday party for all ages. Enjoy a day of musical performances by Stephane Wrembel, the Django Experiment; Mecca Bodega; the Persuasions; the Sweet Divines; and other artists. Themed walking tours with BBG's gardeners and scientists highlight plants' special relationships with bees. Sample "New York City rooftop honey" and other delights by local beekeepers and artisans. Hear renowned apiarist Dennis vanEngelsdorp and nature writer Verlyn Klinkenborg talk about the importance of bees in our environment. Kids can buzz around the grounds in fanciful bee costumes, make bee puppets, explore hands-on science workshops, and enjoy bee-inspired readings by Children's Poet Laureate Mary Ann Hoberman.

There are so many events scheduled and it sounds like it's going to be an awesome honey filled day! The BBG aims to serve all the people in its community and throughout the world by displaying plants and practicing the high art of horticulture to provide a beautiful and hospitable setting for the delight and inspiration of the public, as well as engaging in research, teaching both children and adults, reaching out to help the community, and seeking actively to arouse public awareness of the fragility of our natural environment - both locally and globally.

This is a free event for Saturday, June 12th. Starts at 11a.m. and goes all day til 6p.m.! So if you're in the Brooklyn area, go enjoy some bee-goodness! :)

If you're a friend of Fey Handmade on Facebook then you have already heard that I am in the process of designing lots of new jewelry! I love to create all sorts of things and I've been finding lately that I just can't find the type of jewelry I want to wear and represent, so I decided to start on the design process myself. I've been so inspired by all the beautiful jewelry I see out there that is waaay out of my budget (owning a company doesn't exactly bode well for spending lavish amounts of money on yourself!) and I want to create pieces that are not only affordable, but are bold, yet delicate, feminine beauties. Yes, that is a lot to ask, but I am determined! :) I hope you enjoy what I've come up with so far. I'm starting out small and hope to get bigger ideas as I go along. Let me know what you think! I would love some feedback!

Lately, I've been attempting to focus more on my artwork, and with that comes this shift in my wardrobe to freer styles and looser, more abstract designs. As the warm sunlight beamed down upon my shoulders early this morning, I was quite certain Spring had arrived. I stood outside for a few minutes, hoping to take in the sun's rays as it pierced my incredibly lackluster & pale skin. Feelings of joy & hopefulness circulated throughout my body as I trudged to the post office to deliver a package. Unfortunately, all thoughts of Spring were crushed by a postal worker, who kindly informed me that a huge snow storm was headed our way this evening. :(

The sun is shining a little bit brighter even though there's still snow on the ground and all I can think about is SPRING! I have all my blinds open today and I'm trying to let the sunshine in! All these thoughts are also leading me to my usual behavior of growing little seedlings every year. This year I am a bit tied up with work and more work, so I'm neglecting my duty to shop my seed catalog and get some lil plants started. Hopefully before it's too late! Gotta go get me some dirt!! :)

As most of you ladies can probably sympathize, I have a lot of jewelry. Not all fine jewelry by any means, most of my collections consists of inexpensive items allowing me to add more and more. And especially with the days of online shopping at stores like Fey Handmade and Etsy, I'm sure our collections are all growing. Leading me to the need of finding pretty, yet functional and convenient jewelry storage. I have a large jewelry box to keep many items in, but I really like having some of my pieces out on display in my bedroom. I think it adds a girly, feminine touch and with the right storage piece, can still leave your dresser top uncluttered.

My favorite way to store all of my baubly rings are with an antique or vintage inspired glass bowl. This keeps all of your rings in one area, and still the container is delicate and pretty, looking more like a accent piece. I picked mine up at Anthropologie. Its a perfect place for items like these.

Bracelets are an everyday item for me. I usually have at least 4 on! As you can imagine, this leads to many lying around the house. I have found a couple great bracelet stands at Urban Outfitters - I have two at the moment. One is small and dainty with an adorable little bird perched on top, and the other is white and minimal, but still with a vintage vibe.

When it comes to earrings, I prefer something with a cage like structure. Something you can easily wrap many pairs and styles in. I found this gate like stand at yet again, Urban Outfitters. Its a fairly small stand, measuring only 8" x 8", but it holds a tremendous amount of earrings. It also keeps them paired together well, and pairs don't get tangled.

I like to stick the jewelry tree for necklaces. I love the way it looks! It has a retro vibe mixed with a natural elements, and all of the branches really assist in storing various necklace lengths. Although, I have to warn you, if you pile too many on, they can be difficult to remove.

Oh dear. If you have been watching the news, then you are aware of the enormous blizzard that has basically engulfed the upper East coast. Unfortunately, for me, and I'm going to assume Christine, since she is located in New Jersey, we are buried under what appears to be 4,345 feet of snow. It is truly insane! The roads are horrid and it's scary when to drive when you have an old clunker like I do! I've been shoveling the snow until my arms feel like piles of Jell-O, my hair becomes a giant rat's nest, and all I can think about is the beach and the warmth of the sun. The sun? What is that?! I haven't seen the sun in quite some time! And! And! And! Tonight, my evening classes were canceled because...guess what? 10 more inches of snow! I hope this ends soon!

Today, I wanted to share these absolutely gorgeous bags from Katie Henry of MadebyHank. I've featured her on my blog in many posts because I love her work; her attention to detail and craftsmanship is impeccable.

I wish I had her sewing skills. She's one of my favorite artists on Etsy; her items are incredibly popular, especially her shoulder bags. I love, no, LOVEEEEE these two beauties. Vintage, floral fabric! Bright & nubby wool! AHH!

Unfortunately, they have already been sold to two, incredibly lucky ladies. Sad. For now, I will just stare at them, hoping one of these bags appear in my living room at this very moment. Ah, a girl can dream. Have a lovely day! :)
